In celebration of the 75th birthday of one of the most influential filmmakers in animation cinema
Mamoru Oshii’s films do not provide answers. How could they, given the deeply philosophical and profoundly human themes they explore? Instead, his films ask questions that linger long after the credits roll, spark passionate discussions, and open up new perspectives. His filmography confronts the uncertainties of life head-on, painting them onto the screen with breathtaking visual strokes.
In summer 2026, the master filmmaker turns 75. We could not pass up the opportunity to honor his remarkable career with a retrospective. Like the basset hounds that make appearances in many of his films, we invite you to embark on a journey deep into his filmography.
Our present is particularly marked by uncertainty and doubt. Mamoru Oshii invites us to explore these open questions together through the profound imagery of his films. Along the way, he finds unique approaches to philosophical, religious, and political themes. It is no wonder that filmmakers such as the Wachowski sisters, James Cameron, and Steven Spielberg are among his greatest admirers.
