How does a ship die? Does it grow tired and wash ashore like a whale? The GDR’s deep-sea fishing fleet never lost a ship at sea, yet today only four remain of the hundreds that once existed. They carry within them stories of rescue at sea, drug smuggling, and men who found a home aboard them, far from the coast.
These ships are more than just objects made of steel. Some have become traveling stages and monuments, while others continue to fish for redfish in the North Sea. People return to them to tell stories, sing songs, or simply place their hands on the cold steel, as if they could feel their heartbeat.
