Some like it hot
“Nobody’s perfect!” – that may be true of many things, but not of this film. After all, entertainment hardly gets any “more perfect” than in this delightful blend of gangster film, screwball comedy and gender farce, which was voted the best comedy of all time in a 2017 BBC poll. In it, two unemployed musicians find themselves targeted by criminals and, disguised as women, take refuge in a ladies’ band, where they meet the sweet ukulele player Sugar. And she really gets the newcomers’ blood pumping. Their romantic illusions stand in stark contrast to the fluid identities of the two men … Behind the scenes, there is friction between the director and his lead actress, who suffers from self-doubt – yet she effortlessly steals the show from the men in every scene.
