Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom

Salò, during the era of the Italian Social Republic: Inside a castle, high-ranking officials of an order soon to become the *ancien régime* indulge in a unique, sadomasochistic form of governance. Prisoners are raped, force-fed excrement, and tortured—often to death. Incense wafts through the rooms. Thus, Limbo took on flesh, blood, and semen here on earth. Pasolini’s scathing indictment of the modern world: a global scandal half a century ago—today, a remarkably apt depiction of current realities, presented in a form that feels increasingly less allegorical. Beyond all that: perhaps the finest adaptation of the works of the Marquis de Sade and Dante Alighieri—finest because it cuts straight to the heart of the (respective literary) source material.
