Metropolis – Moroder-Fassung

From Fritz Lang

With Brigitte Helm, Alfred Abel, Gustav Fröhlich, Heinrich George, Rudolf Klein-Rogge

Year 1927

Duration 83 min.

Language English

Whenever the urban Moloch is invoked, Lang’s "Metropolis" serves as the absolute benchmark. An epic set in the distant future, where the rich live in paradisiacal conditions while the poor, subjugated to the inhuman dictates of technology, toil around the clock. The love between two people is meant to change everyone’s fate for the better: “The heart must be the mediator between the brain and the hands.” Continuously expanded over decades with newly discovered material, this “blockbuster”—which is still imitated today—also reveals the problem with the tireless obsession with reconstruction, in which the film has now come to imitate itself: The next restoration will take place next year, marking its 100th anniversary. We present the film with both the original music and the rarely shown “dirty” remix by disco pioneer Giorgio Moroder.
