I’ve Heard the Mermaids Singing
Polly (Sheila McCarthy) works as a secretary for a temp agency – she lives alone and loves taking photographs in her spare time. Sometimes she dreams of being able to fly. Her next secretarial job takes her to Gabrielle St. Peres’s (Paule Baillargeon) gallery. French-Canadian Gabrielle is everything Polly is not: elegant, sophisticated, with impeccable style, an expert in her field.
Polly feels drawn to Gabrielle, tries to speak in a more sophisticated manner for her sake, and fails repeatedly (in a very funny way) to find her way in Gabrielle’s world, whose rules she does not know – see what is probably the best squid scene in a film, long before OLDBOY.
One day, the young artist Mary (Ann-Marie MacDonald) turns up, and Polly realises that she is Gabrielle’s former lover, with whom she is rekindling the relationship. When Polly shows Gabrielle some of her photographs, Gabrielle’s reaction deeply offends her. Moreover, Polly soon realises that Gabrielle is acting fraudulently at the gallery. A scandal ensues – and yet an important step has been taken towards Polly’s own future.
