Imitation of Life
Lora Meredith meets Annie Johnson by chance on a beach, a Black woman whose life, and that of her daughter, is shaped by a society that renders them largely invisible because of their race. What begins as a practical arrangement soon develops into a lasting bond: while Lora pursues her ambitions as an actress, Annie takes care of the household. As the two women build a life together, however, the stark differences between their realities become increasingly apparent. Lora's world revolves around auditions, social expectations, and the pursuit of fame, while Annie strives to give her daughter Sarah Jane a future free from the burden of racial prejudice.
As Sarah Jane grows older, she begins to reject the identity imposed upon her. Her desire to be accepted as white, because her complexion is much lighter than her mother's, sets in motion a painful cycle of denial, distance, and heartbreak, which Annie endures with almost unimaginable patience. Meanwhile, Lora becomes ever more consumed by her career, leaving her own daughter Susie longing for the attention and affection she so rarely receives.
