At the heart of Sandrine Veysset’s debut novel is a farmer’s wife who lives with her seven children on a farm in the south of France. The rhythm of their daily life is dictated by the seasons and the demanding work in the fields. When the father – who is often absent and married to a woman on another farm – comes to collect the harvest, he treats his second family like serfs and is violent. The mother stands protectively in front of her children and tries to convey to them at least a hint of light-heartedness and beauty. With her award-winning debut *Y'aura-t-il de la neige à Noël?*, Veysset established herself in 1996 as one of the rising stars of French auteur cinema. Her captivating fusion of a stark, realistic portrayal of poor rural life and a dreamlike, poetic quality revealed a distinctive style that was also evident in her subsequent works. (C.H./A.P.)
