Before: Escape from New York John Carpenter, US 2016, DCP, b&w, 4 min

New York, 1997: The borough of Manhattan has been converted into a high-security prison. ‘Once you go in, you don't come out.’ When the US president's plane is shot down over the prison island, outlaw Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell) is sent to investigate. The great genre cinema innovator John Carpenter modernises the classic Western (complete with relevant personnel) as a dark dystopia: an homage to the Golden Age and an allegory of the re-wilding of the global West. In addition, Carpenter proves himself here above all as a world builder of the highest order: when dawn finally breaks over the long New York night of reason, one thinks one can see the Third World War looming on the horizon, for which there was no room left in the budget. (N.P.) To kick things off: Carpenter's music video for the new soundtrack recording.
