FromSandrine Bonnaire

WithSabine Bonnaire, Sandrine Bonnaire

Year2007

Duration85min.

LanguageFrench

The early 1990s: Sabine Bonnaire plays the piano and travels to New York with her sister Sandrine. There is little to suggest that the young woman falls within the spectrum of neurodiversity. But when her family circumstances change – the sisters move out, and her mother and Sabine move house – Sabine’s condition deteriorates. She becomes violent and is admitted to a psychiatric ward. With fatal consequences: under heavy medication, she loses many of her abilities. French actress Sandrine Bonnaire brings the story of her autistic sister to the public’s attention with her directorial debut. Starting from Sabine’s current life – she has found a good home in a supported shared flat – Bonnaire looks back in her documentary using home videos, explores her complex feelings and denounces the institutional failure in the care of autistic people.
