Clash By Night

FromFritz Lang

WithBarbara Stanwyck, Paul Douglas, Robert Ryan, Marilyn Monroe

Year1952

Duration105min.

Fritz Lang transposes his bleak worldview from the urban shadows of film noir to a small fishing village on the Californian coast. Mae, disillusioned with life and her dreams, returns there to live with her younger brother. He now fears that the provocative Peggy, on whom he has set his sights, might take too much of a cue from Mae’s independence, whilst Mae, for her part, is trying to settle down … There is no real life in a false one – Lang and Hayes drive this point home mercilessly from the socially critical source material. It was scandalous that they gave sympathetic traits to a woman who did not adhere to the moral standards of her time. Marilyn Monroe, on the other hand, impressed everyone – including Barbara Stanwyck: “She is the star of the future!”
