In his third feature film, Brooks takes on the studio-era Western and lovingly deconstructs it by precisely recreating its familiar images and then consistently shifting them into the realm of the grotesque. The director and his co-writer Richard Pryor have their sheriff, Bart, land in a town rife with prejudice and find himself in a genre that can no longer sustain its own myths. The parody works because it does not merely mock, but exposes: the racism that resonates in many Westerns, the construction of masculinity, the artificial order of a world that never existed. Even as not the greatest fan of the genre, Brooks offers the Western one of its most astute and political deconstructions, and is rewarded with one of his greatest box-office successes.
