Retrospective
Ziemia obiecana (Das gelobte Land)
In late 19th-century Łódź, three young men, a Pole, a German and a Jew, join forces in the hope of making their fortunes together. But their alliance soon turns into a ruthless race for profit. For all its formal opulence, the film maintains a sharp, bitterly ironic and morally incisive perspective. A “Dickensian” portrait of society under capitalism, its political force remains undiminished to this day. (Florian Widegger)
