In 1976, Elfriede Jelinek was invited to create a contribution for the ORF series "Vielgeliebtes Österreich" (Much-Loved Austria). Driven by the author’s evocative imagery and commanding presence—as she perceptively describes the province's economic and historical structures and reflects on the transformation of rural culture against the backdrop of rising mass tourism—*Ramsau am Dachstein* remains a seminal work in Austrian film history. Its initial broadcast sparked protests from the Farmers' League and the ÖVP. On Thursday, August 18, 1988, Jelinek sat before a camera to comment on the evening news: a hostage crisis in West Germany, the plane crash involving the Pakistani president, Jörg Haider—just three of the topics "discussed" (in the truest sense of the word) on that sweltering August evening.
