With its charming black-and-white aesthetic, YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN draws heavily on the Universal films of the 1930s, adopting their visual style and, in some cases, even the original sets, and infusing them with a comedic twist. Gene Wilder plays the descendant of the infamous scientist, who reluctantly takes over his grandfather’s laboratory in Transylvania, only to find himself in a strange world governed less by research than by peculiar obsessions. Roger Ebert: “The film parodies the style, not just the subject matter of the genre. It looks like [James] Whale’s originals, which makes it even funnier. Moreover, paradoxically, it works on two levels: first as a comedy, but also, in its own right, as a strangely touching story.”
