Romero’s *Dawn of the Dead* sparked a veritable zombie boom in the late 1970s. Here we present two European examples that emerged in the immediate wake of their US counterpart: *Voodoo* takes the subject back to its Caribbean roots, where, for reasons unknown, the dead rise from their graves and hunt hungrily for human flesh. Gruesome special effects, a dark electronic soundtrack and, of course, a legendary underwater fight are just a few of the highlights of this Italian thriller. The French director Jean Rollin, known for his deliriously erotic vampire films, takes a more down-to-earth approach in his interpretation – which has been given a daft German title: Profit-hungry winegrowers infect the inhabitants of a remote village with illegal pesticides – with devastating consequences. Santé!
