Set against a backdrop of illness, loss and political upheaval, WHITES WASH AT NINETY tells the moving life story of Bronja Žakelj – a film about resilience and the art of carrying on despite everything. Growing up in the late Yugoslavia, Bronja’s childhood was marked by family tensions and early losses: her mother’s death shook her world at a young age. As a young adult, she herself is diagnosed with cancer – and yet her unbridled will to celebrate life remains. Whilst a country crumbles and reinvents itself around her, she battles through personal crises and grows from them. With a keen sense of contemporary history and emotion, director Marko Naberšnik intertwines individual fate with the upheavals surrounding the end of Yugoslavia. Atmospherically dense and carried by a haunting soundtrack, the film creates a multi-layered portrait of several generations.
