While the City Sleeps
As a serial killer strikes terror into the heart of New York, the overwhelmed heir to a media conglomerate senses an opportunity: whichever of his ambitious employees manages to unmask the murderer will be given control of the company. In the ensuing cutthroat competition, the journalists cast aside what little moral standards they might have possessed… It soon becomes clear that Lang is less interested in the solving of a crime than in exploring how far people are willing to go when the prospect of power is at stake—after all, even the seemingly sympathetic characters are not above self-interest and manipulation. The film’s depiction of a society steered by mass media—echoing themes from "M" and "Fury"—feels almost prophetic. (Florian Widegger)
