Where the Waves Took Her

From Jana Stallein

With Fahma Abdukader Farah, Jeanine Tchokotte, Joseline Cabry Fotsing, Julie Tankeu Yonga, Mariame Diallo

Year 2025

Duration 83 min.

For many people, crossing the Mediterranean is their last hope, but also the most dangerous migration route in the world. As more and more women and children undertake this perilous journey, a midwife has now become a permanent member of a sea rescue ship’s crew. WHERE THE WAVES TOOK HER follows midwife Anne-Katrin on her first mission, portrays the strong team of women on board and gives refugee women the space to tell their own stories.

As we get to know Anne-Katrin and the dedicated female medical team on board, joining them as they prepare for emergencies, the refugee women share their experiences of the suffering they endured on their journey to Europe. Their stories unfold through a distinctive visual approach, combining long-exposure photography with scenes filmed in a water-filled studio. The blurred, poetic images not only protect the women’s identities but also convey the emotional intensity of their experiences in a powerful and original way. On board the ship, the worlds of the women and the crew briefly intersect before the women arrive in Italy, where another journey into the unknown awaits them.
