Werckmeister Harmonies

Temperatures have dropped to 20 degrees below zero, yet there is no snow in the bleak Hungarian provincial town. Crowds from across the region flock to the town as if in a trance to see the traveling circus's main attraction: a dead whale. Young outsider Valuska also sets out with his only friend, György, to marvel at the creature. The snowless cold and the sudden influx of people soon push the town to the brink of chaos. Long-suppressed aggression erupts, a destructive emotional wave sweeps through everyone, whether involved or not, transforming the town into an apocalyptic landscape. Only the friendship between the two men still offers a glimmer of hope and human dignity amid the spectacle.
