Wer im Glashaus liebt… Der Graben
High above the rooftops of Vienna, three people find themselves entangled in a *ménage à trois* within the glass-walled Hundertwasser studio—a situation orchestrated by the man, Igor. His wife, Hanna, and his mistress, Christine, inadvertently discover each other’s existence; what begins as a drama of jealousy evolves into a cinematic experiment exploring love, possessiveness, and new ways of living in early 1970s Vienna. The film sparked a public outcry that extended far beyond the cinema screen, fueled by the arrest of the production team on obscenity charges and the temporary confiscation of the footage. Verhoeven’s work also drew fire from contemporary critics—reactions that, to this day, allow the film to be viewed as a historical document of the late '68 movement.
