Welcome to Sodom

FromChristian Krönes, Florian Weigensamer

Year2018

Duration92min.

LanguageEnglish

WELCOME TO SODOM takes us to the Agbogbloshie e-waste dump on the outskirts of Accra, Ghana's capital – one of the most polluted places on Earth. Every year, hundreds of thousands of tonnes of discarded computers, smartphones, and other electronics from Europe and the Global North end up here.  Instead of explaining the mechanisms of the global e-waste trade, the documentary focuses on the people at the end of this value chain. For many, the landfill is simultaneously a workplace, a habitat, and a source of hope for a better life. Amidst burning piles of cables, toxic fumes, and makeshift workshops, this film tells stories of resilience, dreams, and astonishing creativity. The result is a multifaceted portrait of a place that is both a symbol of the dark side of our consumer society and of human resilience. In a series of powerful images and with a close connection to the people it portrays, WELCOME TO SODOM makes visible where the digital world dumps its waste – and what stories lie hidden behind our discarded devices.
