Year2005

Duration92min.

Grozny, Chechnya, 2000: Long tracking shots along rows of bombed-out houses, burning architectural ruins, abandoned tanks – accompanied by a soldier’s letter read off-screen, its content almost banal. Over a period of three years, the film searches for words and images relating to the Chechen War. Ten years after its outbreak, it contrasts different time periods and reveals the horror of war through photographic archive material, short amateur footage and intense conversations. Trampe speaks with Russian soldiers’ mothers, a nurse and young veterans severely maimed in action. As filming in Chechnya was not possible, Trampe and Feindt use third-party footage showing the brutally degrading arrest of a Chechen unit by Russian soldiers. They interrogate these recordings and confront people in Russia with them. (F.H.)
