Waiting for Raif

Year2022

Duration78min.

Raif Badawi, a Saudi blogger and internet activist, was arrested in 2012. For "insulting Islam", the Saudi Arabian Supreme Court sentences him to ten years in prison, 1,000 lashes, as well as a ten-year ban on leaving the country after his prison sentence ends. He was publicly flogged for the first time in January 2015. Filmed over a period of eight years, "Waiting for Raif" chronicles the tireless struggle of Badawi's wife Ensaf Haidar to free her husband and portrays at close quarters the tragic story of a family torn apart by the intransigence of an absolute monarchy.
