Vertigo
Police officer Scottie Ferguson (James Stewart) quits his job after suffering from a fear of heights and blaming himself for the death of a colleague. Nevertheless, he takes on the job of tailing the suicidal Madeleine Elster (Kim Novak). He courageously rescues the suicidal woman from San Francisco Bay, but she succeeds in her second suicide attempt by throwing herself off a church tower. In Hitchcock's clever game of deception, Scottie falls into every trap that is set for him. As if intoxicated by drugs, he becomes increasingly entangled in his own deception. When he ‘accidentally’ meets Madeleine's near-doppelganger Judy (Kim Novak), Scottie's mental recovery is over for the time being. His urge to remodel her from the ‘realm of the dead’ into Madeleine degenerates into obsession. As a male hysteric with necrophiliac tendencies, James Stewart does not embody ‘the good guy’ here, but writes himself into film history as a death-loving romantic. (E.S.)
