Una Giornata Particolare
Rome, 6 May 1938: Thousands of residents flock to a parade to mark Hitler's visit to Mussolini. This includes civil servant Emanuele and his six children, while his wife Antonietta stays behind at home. By chance, she meets her neighbour Gabriele, a radio announcer who has just been made redundant. In the course of their conversation, they recognise each other as outsiders, trapped within the fascist system. Gabriele reveals to her that he is homosexual and is soon to be deported to an island ... Loren and Mastroianni previously earned their reputation as the dream couple of Italian cinema in comedies; in this chamber play of quiet tones, both are able to completely reinvent themselves: far from glamour, as two people who are brought together by naked desperation.
