Two Thousand Maniacs!
To speak of "Grindhouse" is to invoke the name of Herschell Gordon Lewis with the utmost fervor; after all, it was his efforts—bloody as could be, yet often technically questionable—at low-brow Friday-night entertainment that introduced this concept to Europe four or five decades ago. The most famous of his gore-drenched offerings is *Two Thousand Maniacs!*—think *Brigadoon* without the songs, but with hacked-up bodies instead! Nice-guy tourists wind up in a redneck backwater deep in the middle of nowhere in the "Peach State," where the locals are far too friendly not to be up to something sinister. And lo and behold: the Civil War isn't over here yet... Canonical cinematic anti-art! (Olaf Möller)
