Topkapi
A charmingly eccentric gang plans to steal an emerald-encrusted dagger from Istanbul’s Topkapı Palace. The heist is meticulously planned and seasoned with slapstick and a healthy dose of personal vanity. Characters such as the bumbling Arthur Simpson and the seductive Elizabeth drive the story forward, while the heist itself builds to a spectacular climax. The combination of suspense and ironic humour turns the film into a delightfully playful caper comedy.
Peter Ustinov won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance. The music by Manos Hadjidakis and the colourful sets enhance the film’s Mediterranean atmosphere. A decade after making the landmark heist film Rififi, Jules Dassin reached another creative peak with Topkapi. Its blend of ingenuity and comedy influenced later caper films such as Ocean’s Eleven and has remained a favourite with audiences thanks to its light-hearted spirit and unforgettable ensemble.
