TOKYO Taxi
To make ends meet, Koji works as a taxi driver, navigating the busy streets of Tokyo. Always willing to help out, he agrees to take on an unusual fare for a colleague: driving 85-year-old Mrs Takano from Tokyo to a nursing home in the distant seaside town of Hayama.
But Mrs Takano has no intention of taking the direct route. Instead, she asks Koji to make a series of detours, revisiting places that have shaped her life. As the two gradually overcome their initial awkwardness, the taxi becomes an intimate little world in which the elderly woman begins to tell the extraordinary story of her past.
Her memories reach back to Japan during and after the war, revealing a life shaped by poverty, violence, and the constraints imposed on women of her generation. The streets and landmarks of Tokyo and Yokohama intertwine with these memories, transforming an ordinary car journey into a voyage through the cities’ turbulent history and gradually awakening the interest of the initially aloof taxi driver.
