The Watermelon Woman

FromCheryl Dunye

WithCheryl Dunye, Lisa Marie Bronson, Guinevere Turner, Valarie Walker

Year1995

Duration83min.

Intimate, analytical and full of wit, this seminal work of 1990s New Queer Cinema is conceived as a search for traces of a seemingly lost African-American actress from the Golden Age of Hollywood cinema. As the first Black lesbian filmmaker, Cheryl Dunye appears here herself as the protagonist, driven by an irresistible obsession to uncover the story behind that mysterious WATERMELON WOMAN, who is otherwise only seen on film in her stereotypical role as a maid. Staged as a liminal act between fiction and documentary, in which the archive itself is cross-examined for its porosity and the viewer’s own perspective teeters on the brink of credibility.
