The Wailing
Na Hong-jin’s supernatural masterpiece premiered in the official selection at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival. THE WAILING “elevates genre cinema to a true art form,” according to Screen Anarchy, “while still being nothing for the faint of heart.”
A series of brutal attacks and gruesome murders shakes a small village in South Korea. Neighbors seemingly turn on one another for no apparent reason, attacking each other with horrifying violence. Village police officer Jong-goo tries to investigate, but there seems to be no explanation for the sudden wave of violence. Rumors and accusations quickly spread. Some claim that a Japanese hermit who has recently taken up residence in a cabin in the woods is behind the killings.
The situation threatens to spiral out of control when a demonic force takes possession of the police officer’s daughter. Desperate to save her, Jong-goo turns to a shaman for help, unleashing the true power of evil in the process…
