The Valley of the Bees

FromFrantišek Vláčil

Year1967

Duration97min.

A film from the great era of Czechoslovak cinematography. A masterpiece in black and white that is worth rediscovering. The life of the young Bohemian nobleman Ondřej is depicted in visually stunning shots. His life is promised to the Teutonic Knights by a vow made by his father. The fanatical crusader Armin von Heide becomes his friend and protector. Ondřej's attempt to escape the Order is thwarted by Armin, who pursues him to his Bohemian homeland. In the end, however, it turns out that his inner freedom is more important than his outer freedom.
