The Uninvited
A remote house on the English coast, a pair of siblings determined to buy it, and former residents who met tragic deaths – these are the building blocks of a horror story which, much like Val Lewton’s subtle productions, is staged with restraint and relies primarily on sound, shifts in lighting and subtle unsettling moments. The visual language and the sophisticated set design are clearly influenced by 1920s German Expressionism, whilst the atmosphere between the characters themselves initially seems quite cheerful. This makes the disruption of their fragile happiness by the supernatural all the more effective. THE UNINVITED is considered the first haunted house film and is a favourite of Martin Scorsese and Guillermo del Toro – a true rediscovery!
