The Three Musketeers (1973)
Set in 17th-century Paris, the careless French king Louis XIII (Jean-Pierre Cassel) has allowed much of his power to fall into the hands of the scheming Cardinal Cardinal Richelieu (Charlton Heston).
When the young and hot-headed D’Artagnan (Michael York) arrives in the capital to join the royal guard, he first has to prove himself in duels against the three Musketeers—Athos, Porthos, and Aramis (Oliver Reed, Frank Finlay, and Richard Chamberlain). But when the Cardinal’s men intervene, D’Artagnan sides with the Musketeers, who then take him under their wing.
Together, they must protect the King and Queen of France from the Cardinal’s treacherous schemes.
With wit, imagination, and humor, director Richard Lester brought Alexandre Dumas’s world-famous novel to life in 1973 as an adventurous film for audiences of all ages. Alongside the central trio—Oliver Reed, Richard Chamberlain, and Frank Finlay—the film boasts an outstanding cast including Raquel Welch, Michael York, Roy Kinnear, Christopher Lee, Faye Dunaway, and Charlton Heston.
