The Producers
In his feature film debut, Brooks doesn’t limit himself to a single genre, but instead takes on the entire Broadway mythos. The film adopts the mechanics of a backstage musical and twists them into the absurd. Zero Mostel as a flamboyantly sleazy producer and Gene Wilder as his unintentionally inventive accountant, who want to stage a guaranteed money-making disaster, only to discover that the audience sometimes reacts differently than logic would predict. The result is a satire that not only exposes show business but also reveals how thin the line between success and failure is. Brooks lays bare the vanities, fears, and absurdities of the theater world, and in doing so gives Broadway a new, comically dazzling contour.
