The Prince and the Showgirl
European aristocracy meets American showbiz culture – and already cultural misunderstandings and underlying power struggles begin to unfold. The setting is London in 1911, where, during the coronation celebrations of George V, a prince becomes involved with a dancer, of all people. Can this end well? THE PRINCE AND THE SHOWGIRL is the only film Monroe produced independently through her own production company – a project marked by tensions that find their way into the film: just as its hierarchies clash, so do her newly acquired experience as a method actress and Olivier’s classical theatre background. Gerhard Midding: “Olivier dreamed of being a global star, and the global star Marilyn Monroe dreamed of being a great actress.”
