The Passion of Remembrance

FromMaureen Blackwood, Isaac Julien

WithAnni Domingo, Joseph Charles, Antonia Thomas, Carlton Chance

Year1986

Duration83min.

A visual mosaic of both real and mystical landscapes: whilst conflicts within a family cause friction, another sphere of experience opens up. Abstract, imagined, feminine: this new level serves as a space of contradiction, as well as a realm of new ways of thinking and possibilities. Distorted archive footage flashes through the film time and again. “To unpick and unwrap what you are and who you are”, as Blackwood writes, requires spaces outside the white film industry: the Sankofa Film and Video Collective is filling those gaps for Black female directors and, with THE PASSION OF REMEMBRANCE, is producing its first feature film. Contrasting perspectives and the political tensions of Britain under Thatcher: an experimental work of the utmost relevance!
