The Ozu Diaries

From Daniel Raim

Year 2026

Duration 139 min.

Language Japanese

After Yasujiro OZU’s death in 1963, 32 personal diaries spanning three decades were discovered, offering an unusually intimate insight into the life of the filmmaker behind some of the most timeless masterpieces in film history.

Daniel RAIM’s documentary uses these diaries as a guiding thread, combining OZU’s own words with letters, notebooks, photographs, archival interviews, and previously unreleased footage. The film traces OZU’s life and career, shedding light on the experiences that shaped his distinctive vision: his passionate engagement with cinema and the influence of collaborators such as Setsuko HARA and screenwriter Kogo NODA.

It also explores the profound grief left by the death of his friend Sadao YAMANAKA and the deep rupture brought about by the war years. RAIM traces how personal loss and the trauma of war gradually found their way into OZU’s films, from his earliest works and masterpieces such as Tokyo Story to his later films.
