The Night (Gaua)

The Basque Country in the 17th century, during the Inquisition: the young Kattalin flees from her husband into the darkness of the night. She is already being pursued by the next sinister force when she is taken in by three women in the forest. The trio tell of supernatural events taking place in the village in those days – events that seem to be linked to the burden weighing so heavily on Kattalin’s heart. Through magical imagery, Paul Urkijo Alijo once again conjures up the world of Basque folklore, witches and divine spirits to tell a story of guilt and the self-empowering appropriation of those monsters that are abused by patriarchy and the Church for the purposes of repression.
