Even before KING KONG conquered the cinemas, dinosaurs were already stomping across the screen. THE LOST WORLD sends an expedition deep into the Amazon, where Professor Challenger intends to prove that prehistoric creatures still exist. What follows is adventure cinema on a grand scale and a technical marvel of the silent film era. Stop-motion animation brings brontosauruses, pterodactyls, and other prehistoric creatures to life. The fact that the film itself was later largely lost and had to be reconstructed from fragments only makes its magic even greater today. The film impressively demonstrates that it is not just a precursor to later monster movies, but a milestone of fantasy cinema itself, without which there probably wouldn't be a JURASSIC PARK.
