*The Killing* is an existentialist film noir in which a meticulously planned robbery of a racecourse betting shop is thwarted by the vagaries of chance, individual failings and – above all – unrequited feelings and longings. For the first time, Kubrick adapts a work by another author, translating it visually through the extension of his own vision in Lucien Ballard’s camera: as a sequence of ellipses, visual symbols and camera movements that reflect the theme in cinematic language. The Killing depicts the essence and course of an event that is presumably central to the human condition in a manner as unsettling, absurd and bitingly vivid as few other films in the Black Series. The name of the event: failure. (H.T.)
