Clark Kellogg (Matthew Broderick) has come to New York from Vermont to study film at university. But as soon as he arrives, he is robbed by the taxi driver and his university lecturer turns out to be a vain ‘wannabe director’. When Clark accidentally gets involved in Mafia affairs, things take an unpredictable turn: he is taken under the wing of a gangster boss who looks strikingly similar to Don Corleone from The Godfather (and is played by Marlon Brando). Andrew Bergman's witty crime comedy not only captivates with Brando's affectionate self-parody of one of his most famous roles, but also ranks among the most successful Hollywood surprises of its era with an excellent ensemble cast, crazy ideas and a warm tone. Bergman also indulges in Marx references: the university professor imitates Groucho Marx and the immortal name Rodolfo Lassparri from A Night at the Opera is used. (C.H.)
