The Early Works of Cheryl Dunye
This short film programme brings together the influential, fearless early works of Cheryl Dunye, a pioneering voice of New Queer Cinema and director of the groundbreaking film *The Watermelon Woman*. By blending fiction, documentary and autobiography, Dunye masterfully explores the intersections of race, sexuality and the culture of memory. With a DIY aesthetic and an ironic, personal perspective, she (de)constructs lesbian identity, desire and history – whilst raising the question of whose stories are heard and whose narratives are forgotten.
The programme includes the following short films:
JANINE (1990, 6‘, OV)
SHE DON’T FADE (1991, 23‘, OV)
VANILLA SEX (1992, 4‘, OV)
THE POTLUCK & THE PASSION (1993, 15‘, OV)
AN UNTITLED PORTRAIT (1993, 8‘, OV)
GREETINGS FROM AFRICA (1996, 14‘, OV)
