The Doom Generation
Part of the RADICAL 90s special series.
SEX. VIOLENCE. WHATEVER. A heterosexual movie by Gregg Araki. (yeah, right)
Gregg Araki's second contribution to what would later become the “Teen Apocalypse Trilogy” lives up to the trilogy's name. The ultimate end for atheists, individual death, is omnipresent in this completely exaggerated, nihilistic, and transgressive road movie, which is sexy and existentialist, brutally honest, and funny at the same time.
“Ever feel that reality is more twisted than dreams?” Well, if the plot in THE DOOM GENERATION is supposed to represent the reality quoted, well yes I do! Because when the young lovers Jordan White (James Duval) and Amy Blue (Rose McGowan) meet Xavier Red (Johnathon Schaech) on their way home, it marks the beginning of a trip across the United States that will leave behind a thick, fat trail of blood and a lot of confusion. In between, there is high sexual tension, with only occasional releases and a collective wait for the eagerly awaited threesome. And when it arrives? “Shit... I gotta pee.”
