With THE CAMERAMAN, Keaton creates the last unqualified masterpiece of his career, a great summary of his ideas on the problems and principles of filmmaking, and at the same time the prophetic conception of his decline. Keaton himself plays a photographer who tries his hand as a newsreel cameraman for love's sake, even though the company bosses have no use for him. Like Dziga Vertov, Keaton uses particularly spectacular film techniques for his time in THE CAMERAMAN and takes a critical view of the fast pace of the images that are now being produced.
