The Andromeda Strain is a groundbreaking science fiction novel by Michael Crichton, published in 1969, which established the techno-thriller genre. The story centres on a deadly alien microorganism that, following the crash of a US military satellite in the small town of Piedmont, Arizona, nearly wipes out the entire population.

The film is known for its documentary style and the technical special effects of its time. One notable change was the transformation of Dr Leavitt into a female character (Ruth Leavitt).
