Teenage Death (and some Sex)
Jane Schoenbrun’s "TEENAGE SEX AND DEATH AT CAMP MIASMA" was one of the surprises of last summer. The film draws upon the legacy of two major horror franchises—those featuring Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees—and brings this murderous duo together in an unconventional way (certainly more unconventional than in 2003’s "Freddy vs. Jason"). Both films play with the expectations established by their predecessors: in one, the body of young Jesse becomes the site of increasingly unbridled desire (notable for the homoerotic undertones that resonate throughout the film); in the other, following Jason’s death in the fourth installment, a new killer in a hockey mask begins to wreak havoc. Summer camp, nightmares, and identity crises—or, how a genre redefines its own rules to keep its monsters alive. (Florian Widegger)
