Sziget a szárazföldön

From Judit Elekn

With Manyi Kiss, Éva Almási, László Bathó, József Bánfalvi, Itala Békés

Year 1969

Duration 76 min.

Language Hungarian

The lonely, elderly "Lady from Constantinople" occupies four rooms—but her envious neighbors persuade her to find a smaller place to live. In her search for the ideal new tenants, she encounters many new people and, with a childlike, naive wonder, discovers the outside world—a world from which she had long kept herself apart. Her peaceful, nostalgic, solitary existence collides with the grasping, selfish realities of others, unfolding in scenes pushed to the point of absurdity—scenes that reflect the housing crisis in socialist Hungary. Elek’s first short film, *Találkozás* (Encounter), accompanies the feature as a kind of preliminary study for her hybrid documentary technique, which consistently and successfully challenges the notion that fiction and non-fiction can be clearly separated.
