In the early 1950s, while waiting for the return of her husband—a film director sentenced to a long prison term due to his political activities—Luca tells her frail, elderly mother-in-law that he is away in America, working on a film shoot… Károly Makk recounts the story of these two women as they wait, employing subjective montage sequences in which memories, fantasies, and reality collide—a technique that ushered in a new era for Hungarian cinema. The fact that the author, Tibor Déry, and the actor who plays the husband, Iván Darvas, were themselves sentenced to prison following the 1956 Revolution lends "Love" the weight of a courageous reflection on the power dynamics that prevailed behind the Iron Curtain.
