Szegénylegények
Following the crushed revolution of 1848, representatives of the Habsburg monarchy herd Hungarian rebels into a fenced-in enclosure in search of someone—or something. What exactly they are looking for remains unclear, while tensions among the sullen men continue to mount… With a mastery unseen before, Jancsó choreographs camera movements and the actors within the frame into a menacing dance—a cinematic language that would go on to influence directors such as Sergio Leone and Béla Tarr. By relocating the story to the Puszta—where the vast horizon evokes more fear than hope—the film instills a sense of unease, constructing a stylized world filled with anachronisms. This invites the viewer to look for meaning elsewhere: a strategy to circumvent censorship while still exploring the very nature of power. (Fruzsi Vajda)
